Welcome to the Rare Games Corner! In this section from time to time we'll upload a rare game that, as far as we know, is not available over the internet or in any of the circulating CD collections. It's a gift from us, in order to help ease the suffering while waiting for the Gamebase Collection to be released!

Disk Version
Tape Version

Not a lot of people know this, but the tape text-only versions of all later Level 9 adventure games contained much more detailed text in locations' and items' descriptions (in order to make-up for the absence of graphics) than their disk counterparts, making playing both tape and disk versions a separate experience. Sadly, most of these one-sided text-only three-parters tended to be erased by collectors, who in many instances mistakenly believed them not to be 100% versions and were replacing them with the 2-sided disk versions.

We present here what Level 9 text-only versions we possess, including (for completion's sake) the tape version of Gnome Ranger which is fairly common. By clicking on a picture you can see its normal size.

Ticket to Paris
1986 Blue Lion Software
Blue Lion produced five educational games for the C64 between 1986 and 1988, as part of their 'Ticket' series. They were:

Ticket to London
Ticket to Paris
Ticket to Spain
Ticket to Hollywood
Ticket to Washington, DC

Only Paris falls in the 'rare' category.

Crosscheck
1986 Datasoft
The only professional Crossword game on the C64!

Teddy Bear-rels of Fun
1987 Developmental Learning Materials
A fun game for all ages, lets you draw your favourite Teddy Bears, print them, then decorate your room with them! Guaranteed satisfaction! :))

Cabal (US Version)
1990 Capcom
This US version of the popular arcade game has not been around much. For the record, let me mention that the European version was produced in 1989 by Ocean and Special FX.

Kaiser (UK Version)
1985 Ariolasoft

It's here! The first fruit of our Forever Lost? section, it was brought to you thanks to the hard earned pennies of Matthew Allen who gave the highest bid in e-bay.

The original's copy protection was removed in-house by The Borg. Don't you just love a happy end? :)

Pictionary
(UK Version)
1989 Domark

A nice board game (especially if you have artistic talent ;) the French version of which seems to be more common than the English! Well, not any more...

Sorcerer Lord
(UK Version)
1988 P.S.S.

A notorious for its difficulty Middle-Earth-type strategy game, whose German version is very common.

Pirates!
1987 Microprose

Not so much a rare game, but the amount of its faulty versions over the net is enormous! This version has no disk-changing problems. If played in CCS64 use 'normal' load or the game will crash on the loading screen. Turning on '1541 status' from CCS64's 'special' menu eases the long load wait by giving you something to watch! Changing the emulator's speed to 500% during load (ALT+F3) helps also. The 3rd disk included is the savedisk.

The Forest of Doom
1984 Puffin Books

Little known, this is one of the best multiple-choice adventures on the C64 (if not the best!). It contains the whole text of the (sadly now out-of-print) Puffin Game Book that bears the same name, including graphic representations of all enemies encountered! The dvarven items that must be collected in order to win the game have been placed in alternative locations, however, so walkthroughs of the book do not apply here. This version contains the file "BLOCK1", missing from all other online versions which go into an endless loading loop when you finish the first game section.

Crack of Doom
1989 Beam Software

An ultra-rare gem, this is the 4th Tolkin game, after The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and Shadows of Mordor. This game was distributed only in Australia and the US, after the demise of Melbourne House, and remained very little known. In fact, most C64 users don't even know a C64 version exists!

The Inheritance
(UK Version)
1986 Infogrames

This game can be easily found in its Dutch (De Erfenis) and German (Die Erbschadt) versions, but this English version is really rare. We seem to have trouble with most Infogrames' games, so pls contact us if you own any original C64 Infogrames game.

  Decision in the Desert
1985 Microprose
This strategy game's non-working version is extremely widespread over the net. Unfortunately, it does not contain a lot of needed hidden sectors and cannot be repaired in any way. Well, it now does not need to be repaired as we present here an 100% version, complete with codes typed by yours truly...

Lunari
1988 Reaktor/Ariolasoft

A shoot-em-up (for a change) which was requested in our forum.

Panzer Strike
1987 S.S.I.

A strategy game requested in our forum. Consists of four disks, three of which are program disks (West, East, & Africa). The fourth contains scenarios, including a tutorial.

Buck Rogers - Countdown to Doomsday
1990 S.S.I.

This is the 6-sided original version of the game. The one circulating is a 3-sided version that requires on average, say, 5 disk changes a minute when material is loaded. I don't know what the crackers were thinking when they were 'shortening' it, but they created a practically unplayable version... (if you have the 3-sided version, just try to watch the demo to see what I mean!)

Dungeon Masters Assistant - Volume II: Characters & Treasures
1989 S.S.I.

If you are a Dungeon Master in the famous AD&D games you are supposed to find this very useful. However, I don't know if the new stuff out there makes the data in this 1989 offering outdated...

Gradius
1986 Konami

The US version of Nemesis, from the personal collection of our J2001C. NTSC only, so watch out.

So... Who can pal-fix it? :)

Dragonworld
1984 Trillium (later Telarium)

This version contains a 5th disk with arcade sequences. Many thanks to Jeremy [mjKapp] for sharing this rare gem with the whole C64 community.

Anybody aware of another Trillium/Tellarium adventure's version containing arcade sequences?

The Amazing Spiderman (Disk Version)
1990 ODE/Paragon

Contains an option screen and a different starting position than the commonly-circulating tape version. Also detects if your machine is PAL or NTSC...

Attack of the Atlanteans
1983 General Masters Corp.

Wrestled over e-bay by our own Matt Larsen with a huuuge bid, this quality game is now available for download (and look at the size of that gamefile! :)
