maybe your config has been saved with sound off.
check the MESS.INI
Also the files in the MESS\INI and CFG Directories
to see if the sound is switched off.

or try adding -sound to the script.
Add_CLP( -sound -window -skip_gameinfo )
if like you say, the sound is ok in MESS when not run through gamebase.
the script must be switching it off. |

Will also try with Gamebase64 as having same issue with WinVICE |
