I'm not sure how the forum works, but it seems that if I use ANY 'Goto first unread post', the whole of the forum (i.e. every thread in every forum) gets marked as read, not just the thread I just looked at. Iits as if I clicked the 'Mark all forums as read' link

Use the "view new posts since last visit" link which is on top of the page when you click the "forums" tap. It's simpler :-P
