Can't setup GameBase64 V5 (new to Windows)

Tue Dec 16, 2008 9:53 pm

Hi,

this is my first time on Windows (normally I use Mac OS X), so I'm really confused with the installation of GameBase 64 V5.

I tried many different ways - but I can't handle it... :(

What I have is Windows XP SP3 (which is running via VMWare Fusion 2 on my iMac) and these two ISO-images called "GB64_v05.iso" and "GB64_v05_Addon.iso".

First one includes this:

Longplays (folder)
gb64v05.exe
install.txt
Photos (folder)
Emulators (folder)
autorun.inf
autorun.exe
gbv12_setup.exe
Sidplayers (folder)
C64Music (folder)
Screenshots (folder)
readme.txt
licence.txt
c64.ico

And second one this:

Games (folder)
Extras (folder)

I started with the installation of "gbv12_setup.exe".

Now I copied all folders from the ISOs manually to:

C:\Program Files\GameBase

Here I can find now:

C64Music (folder)
Docs (folder)
Emulators (folder) - the unzipped inside
Extras (folder)
Games (folder)
gb64 (folder) - the folder I choosed in the next step as the database one
Longplays (folder)
Photos (folder)
Screenshots (folder)
Scripts (folder)
Sidplayers (folder) - the unzipped inside
BMP2GIF.exe
BMP2PNG.exe
Empty.mdb
GameBase (Internet ShortCut)
GameBase.exe
GameBase.ini
GBFuncs.dll
GBSql.dll
GBText.ini
GBToolbox.exe
gemus.dat
Gemus.dll
GemusText.ini
History.txt
LHA.exe
License.txt
PNGlib.dll
Starlynx.exe
Starzip.exe
unins000.dat
unins000.exe
unzip32.dll
vbzip10.dll
verify.txt
zlib.dll

Now I started "GBToolbox.exe" from the Desktop to create a new database (gb64).

Then I started the "GameBase.exe" from the Desktop and started the "Emulator Setup Wizard" from the GEMUS-Menu (which works fine).

Now I edited the Paths from the Tools-Menu and inside the Options of the Tools-Menu I also selected the path to the SID-Player.

But if I choose "verify available files" this happens:

C:\Program Files\GameBase\gb64\gb64.mdb

Games not found: 0/0
Tunes not found: 0/0
Pictures not found: 0/0
Extras not found: 0/0

I know, maybe the problem is that my database is empty right now? I would like to download a RomCenter 2.0 Datafile, but couldn't find one for GameBase64... :(

Maybe I made another mistake? Thanks a lot for help!

From the "install.txt" file:

Installation Instructions for 'The GameBase64 Collection v05'
=============================================================

- Install GameBase v1.2 (gbv12_setup.exe)

- Extract all C64 emulators and SID-Players to your hard disk

- Copy \C64Music, \Photos, \Screenshots
to your hard disk (not essential, but recommended)

- Run the database setup program of The GameBase64 Collection
(gb64v05.exe) and follow the onscreen instructions!

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE YOUR GAMEBASE FRONTEND FOLDER
IN THE INSTALLER BECAUSE THE GB64 DATABASE NEEDS TO BE
INSTALLED IN A SUBFOLDER CALLED GBC_V05

- Afterwards you can setup the emulators in GameBase via the
GEMUS Setup Wizard. Make sure you point it to the folders
containing the emulators that you extracted from this CD.

- The path of the SID-Player can be specified in the GameBase
options dialog. All other paths (Screenshots, Photos, etc.)
must be configured via the paths dialog.

=====================================================

Looks like you missed out the step in BOLD text above

I've seen this file, but I couldn't understand all points, sorry...

Because of this I wrote what I've done and hope, someone could explain me, what I've missed?

Thanks a lot!

You have to run (double-click) BOTH the gbv12_setup.exe AND gb64v05.exe - from your original description you did not run the second one, which actually puts the DATABASE file into the directory.

But I've started the GameBase.exe? It has not the same name as in the manual (gb64v05.exe), but it should be the right app?

You have run the setup of the Gamebase frontend successfully by starting this file: gbv12_setup.exe.
In the same ISO image, you will find a file called gb64v05.exe. This file contains the database of C64 files. You have to run this setup file too, after you have setup gbv12_setup.

If I understand it correctly, you have only run the gbv12_setup.exe file and then tried to start it. Don't try to start anything before you have run the gb64v05.exe setup. After that you don't have to run gbtoolbox to create a database, gb64v05.exe does that for you.

So the correct order is:

- Run gbv12_setup.exe to install the frontend (you already have done this)
- Run gb64v05.exe to install the database of C64 games (it seems you skipped this one, just run it the same way as you started gbv12_setup)
Now you must be able to launch the frontend (gamebase.exe) from the Start menu.
Follow the steps mentioned above to complete the setup (extracting emulators, copying games and screenshots etc.)

Thank you very much - this was the missing point! :)

I've started the gb64v05.exe from the first ISO, started the GameBase.exe from my Desktop and ... voila, here it is now.

The Emulator Setup Wizard started automatically, I set up paths and verified - all seems to be fine.

C:\Program Files\GameBase\GBC_v05\GBC_v05.mdb

Games not found: 0/19204
SIDs not found: 0/35168
Screenshots not found: 0/19211
Extras not found: 0/20562
