I'm sure this has been asked to death but what are most C64 emulator people using to play these games.
I have WinVice right now which appears to be good but I do have problems with many of my favorite games like Red Storm Rising and Maniac Mansion.
I can't seem to get by the mission orders screen of RSR and get a CPU Jam with MM....
I went back a version on WinVice to 1.14 but that doesn't seem to help. I now have the official gamebase zips so I'm assuming that the images contained are good.
I also have CCS64 DirectX 8 version that seems pretty good.
but I'm still not having much success with these games.
I used to have comeback64 but can't seem to find them as their site went poof.
Has anyone had success with these games?
Here is what I would like to play:
Red Storm Rising
Maniac Mansion
Psi 5 Trading
IF anyone has gotten these things to run past the disk swap I would be very thankful to know what emulator they are using.
unfortunatly I'm afraid my problem may be that I'm running an Athlon 64 on my main test rig (I have a seperate emulator box) and since most of the Win32 versions are optimized for Pentium that could be the problem I'm having...Shouldn't be but I recognize it could be!

What is the best C64 emulator out there?

For each of those games, try this:
Select game in front end
Press F2 to bring up GEMUS commands
Type tde=yes and click okay
Try again
This should enable True Drive Emulation for each of the games which some require to function properly in Vice (in CCS64, TDE is automatically on).

Also for Maniac Mansion at least, I know there will be an 'Original Disk' version that works fine in VICE 1.15 and CCS64 V2. (no CPU jams) in the next release V03.

Thanks guys...
I got Mansion to run under CCS with Dx8...
My only problem with that emulator is it keeps defaulting to jeyset for the input as opposed to the adaptor. I'm sure I can fix this in the Gemus script but haven't figured it out yet...
I'll try the true drive emul in Vice for RSR but I'm pretty sure I had it on as a default...

Just to bump this thread, what emulator is generally used by the team?
CCS64 v2.0 beta Direct X is probably IMO the most authentic looking but I hate having to use the keys to get in and out. CCS64 3.0b Direct X looks the business but I noticed If I enlarge the window too much I get some glitches in the sound, also I I recall this version is a bit prone to crashing.
So is Win Vice the choice for most?

I notice the CPU Jam problem hasn't been discussed too much. I just want to mention that *some* Games/Demos were written to run on "American" C64's. That is to say "NTSC" standard. I would say 97% of the time, if you get a CPU Jam error.. Switch to NTSC video mode and try the program again. Most of the time it will work!

If David would implement some startup command line options into Hoxs64, we could start supporting it in GameBase.

Ok, I was more thinking about a proper GEMUS script that allows you to autostart games via the play button!

Absolutely Michael, David has done a fine job with his emulator. His requirement of DX9 kind of puts a "damper" on the "Pre-XP" people. (Although the '98 version is still available.) And I'm not knocking his work at all.. but, command line options would be a nice addition to HOX.

Not really — put d3dx9_31.dll in the directory of Hoxs64, and it will work in Win98 as well.joebucci wrote:Absolutely Michael, David has done a fine job with his emulator. His requirement of DX9 kind of puts a "damper" on the "Pre-XP" people. (Although the '98 version is still available.)
You probably won't have to wait too long.joebucci wrote:And I'm not knocking his work at all.. but, command line options would be a nice addition to HOX.
