stop the spammers

Sun Nov 25, 2007 3:24 pm

Just a thought really.

Is it possible to stop all the porn spam in the forums.
as they all seem to be coming from the same place.
maybe a ban on pictures or links with the URL ending ".spam"
or even a ban on links relating to known adult sites.
or is it much easier said than done??

No it's easy enough done on most boards, and I do have a few modifications that would cut the spammers down by over 99%....the problem is that this board has been heavily customised so updating is not as straightforward as it could be.

It a major pain in the xxxx for me too I'm sick of deleting spam posts, I used to delete their accounts too but I gave up on that as being far too time consuming and they don't use the accounts again anyway - they just make new ones!

You could always implement a question into the registration process. I tried using a math equation, but the spammers found a way past it. I then asked them to enter a word which related to the website, and since then - no more spam.

Example: What letters are missing? G_me_ase64.com
Answer: ab

If they are really motivated they would physically visit the site and determine the process, but even then you can randomly rotate the letters.

What about using a small pic that has hidden letters inside and the user must type'em in? A lot of sites use it, thus I assume it could work.
But then again, some of the gfx are so confused that I (aka Sir Eagle-Vision) need multiple retries until I can recognize the letters correctly - maybe this would be too much for vision-impaired people.

Strangely enough the auto spam bots only write to the forum which you have to register to, all others are open access to every surfer. So maybe changing the registered forum to open access solves the problem. :x

I don't know how it is called, but I'm sure that people suffering from color-blindness (and afaik a huge percentage of males are affected by this) will have enourmous difficulties with it unless the colors are chosen very carefully.

This whole spam thing is getting embarrassing to say the least.

First job for the administrators should be to finish this for once and for all.

Just a daily experience at work. It does depend, however, on the color combinations. Some combinations work fine, orange on a greenish bg or vice versa can cause lots of trouble for some people.

As I'm writing I can count 21 porno spams in a row.
What kind of costumizations? Do we really need them?

At this point I'd say "NO" whatever the customization is, and please update fourm code.

I've just moved all the spam posts to a hidden spam folder to try and highlight the issue as I'm trying to get the spamming issues resolved. As I mentioned in an earlier post I know which board modifications are needed but getting them done is another matter - fingers crossed I'll get somewhere this time as I'm right fed up with having to delete so many spam posts on a daily basis
