Microprose Conflict in Vietnam D64 problem

Sat Feb 25, 2006 10:46 pm

Just to quickly tell you, Conflict in Vietnam by Microprose for the C64 on your site has only been cracked by just one crew, ESI. This crack does not work, instead of getting the scenario result and an option to go bck to the main menu, the game does not recognise the disk/D64. This only leaves you with switching off the 64 and reloading the game/restarting the game in the emulator. No version of this on any site works because all D64's out there are the ESI version.

Until such time as a working version becomes available (unlikely) I am suggesting the download for this D64 should be de-linked.

I have discovered information both at Lemon64 and The C64 Preservation Project that explains the problem with Conflict in Vietnam in more detail.

I am telling you this because I do not want anybody else to go through what I went through trying to find a working D64 so I could play this game. I must have downloaded it from 25-30 sites trying it on each emulator, all to no avail. There was no information anywhere to tell me it was a wasted look. It took many hours out of my free time.

Conflict in Vietnam fix!

Sun Feb 26, 2006 8:10 am

Go to Lemon64 and you will see in the "Games" thread a topic called "Conflict in Vietnam Woes". There is a link there for a corrected D64 (Well not 100% fixed but more fixed than the D64 on here and other sites!)

This site should go and pick it up and replace it in their downloads section and get rid of the non working one.

Thanks. It's just a matter of changing the disk ID to "AC".

We don't pull games from the download section just because they are buggy if there is no other version available. GBC v04 already had a "Not 100%" note in the description before this discussion started. Also, we knew about your Lemon post before you posted here (although we do appreciate your post here), but you don't need to post here and email us and then email us again, as we do read everything. Hopefully a clean crack can be made, as we (Pete R.) do have an original disk. Thanks again.

Well I am sorry for wanting to help. Will just assume everybody knows. If sites know they should put it up at the relevent game download page! I would then have not wasted hours looking for a working version when sites knew it was not working.

My main reason for putting the message up was to help others avoid what I wnt through.

If you already knew and did not change anything on the site then it is sites like yours that are as much the problem as the defective D64's.

Imagine if that first website I had gone to had a note saying "this D64 is known to have problems" next to the download button. I then went to the next site and saw the same message. Do you not think I would have stoppoed at number two and saved myself hours?

Is it just the responsibilty of the site just to say "over 30,000 files available for download - aren't we great!" or to actually do something when they know a D64 is bugged?

I'm lost for words. With your arrogant and demanding attitude (not just in this thread), I don't think anyone here gives a damn if you save yourself hours or not. Someone from the GB64 team could maybe explain why it's more comfortable for them to update the files on a yearly basis, but you're clearly not intelligent enough to comprehend the facts.

Wow! Magnate was far too nice in his flame. I guess this guy just reads random parts of the responses to his posts, ignoring other parts, like "although we do appreciate your post here".

Is there some way to block his IP from downloading any of the "free for him" downloads? Did you read that? FREE FOR YOU, NOT FREE FOR GAMEBASE. Humorguy sounds like a socialist who expects everything to be handed to him and paid for by the 10% of people who actualy work. He then cries when he has to wait more than 5 minutes in line to recieve services for which he has done nothing to earn. Where is your site where I can download 30,000 files for free? Socialist nitwit!

Wow. I do have a _little_ sympathy for the guy. Time is the one thing you can't make more of. You can always make more money, but time is priceless. Heck, I searched for YEARS for a working version of Carmen Sandiego (World). They all hung at the intro. Come to find out, the emulators I was using at the time (PC64 and I forget the other one) wouldn't run the game!

I now, of course, use VICE 1.10 (subsequent versions give me trouble) and have little or no problems with anything!

Yes, time is the thing! And if humorguy only would have a small clue of how many thousand hours of our spare time we already put into this project he may stop crying...

I really love these "why don't you do it this way (in your spare time and for free) so I don't waste my precious time" statements! 8)

You are appreciated

Of course, and I am very, very gratefull for all the time your team has invested in collecting, catagorizing, describing, etc. that you've done. As a matter of fact, if you ever decided to do a "Productivity" software section, I have about 350MB of -just- that!

Thank you all again,
Sincerely,

Are you talking about programs like word processors, sound/music editors, program languages, etc.?
I am working on a 'Gamebase' that covers all C64 software EXCEPT games, demo's and magazines.
At this moment I have a database with 900 entries and 1400 files are waiting to be added. There are still a lot of doubles/not working titles, but at the end there must be about 1500 unique titles.
I think you will understand that I am very interested in 350 MB of programs that I can add tot the database! 8)
Maybe we can arrange something to swap the files we have? Please PM me or reply if you are willing to share your files.

Hey KC! I remember us doing a "trade" of sorts a couple years back. I recently downloaded the GB64 "APPSnTOOLSbase64" collection, and was VERY happy to see there's quite a bit of MY stuff in the set! :D

I came across an old box of 1581 disks during a recent move, and ONE program among them that stands out to me (Because I'm a musician) was "Bank Street Music Writer" that I had "Snapshotted" and placed on 3-1/2" disk for my 1581 drive.

Now, I've come across versions on the 'net (Including the *supposed* "Original D64 file.) None of them actually WORK in any emulator. To keep it short, My "backup" is the ONLY version that works perfectly (In NTSC mode only.. I am in the US).

Too bad it's a "Snapshot"... But it WORKS! - Interested? I'd be happy to send it to you. You guys are doing a FANTASTIC job!

Thanks!

I'm interested in everything that isn't in my collection yet. :D
If you have something that you cannot find in the database or have a working version of a bugged program, you can send it to kc [at] c64mail [dot] com.
Thanks!
