Avatar Woes

Every time I try to attach a picture to my profile from my pictures folder I get a beautiful red cross - Any suggestions?
This forum does not allow you to upload an avatar.
You can store it on any webspace you might have, or a site like Photobucket, and then copy the link (just the http:// address) into the box on the Profile screen.
